How to Maintain Your Gaming PC: The Complete 2026 Guide

Maintaining a gaming PC means cleaning dust every 3–6 months, monitoring temperatures, updating drivers monthly, and replacing thermal paste every 2–3 years. These simple steps prevent throttling, crashes, and premature hardware failure. This guide covers everything from basic cleaning to advanced maintenance — whether your rig cost £500 or £2,000+.

This guide covers everything you need to know about keeping your gaming PC in top shape, from weekly quick checks to annual deep maintenance.

Why PC Maintenance Matters

A neglected gaming PC doesn’t just slow down — it can actually damage components over time. Dust buildup causes overheating, which reduces the lifespan of your GPU, CPU, and motherboard. Outdated drivers lead to crashes and poor frame rates. A full SSD tanks your load times and can even affect Windows stability.

The good news? Most maintenance takes just 10–15 minutes and requires no technical expertise.

Monthly: Quick Health Checks (15 Minutes)

1. Check Your Temperatures

Download a free tool like HWMonitor or HWiNFO64. Run your favourite game for 10 minutes, then check:

  • CPU temperature: Should stay below 85°C under load. Above 90°C means your cooler needs attention.
  • GPU temperature: Most cards run safely up to 83°C. If yours is hitting 90°C+, the fans or thermal paste may need servicing.
  • Idle temperatures: Both should sit between 30–50°C when you’re just browsing.

2. Update Your Graphics Drivers

NVIDIA and AMD release driver updates roughly every month, often with significant performance improvements for new games. Use GeForce Experience (NVIDIA) or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition to check for updates. Always do a clean install when updating.

3. Check Your Storage Space

Keep at least 10–15% of your SSD free at all times. A nearly full SSD slows down dramatically because it can’t efficiently manage data. Uninstall games you’re not playing — you can always re-download them later.

Every 3 Months: Dust Cleaning

What You Need

  • A can of compressed air (or an electric air blower like the DataVac)
  • A microfibre cloth
  • A small soft brush (an old makeup brush works perfectly)

The Cleaning Process

  1. Power off and unplug your PC completely. Press the power button once to discharge any remaining electricity.
  2. Remove the side panel. Most modern cases use thumbscrews or a latch.
  3. Hold fans in place while blowing air. Spinning fans with compressed air can generate a back-current that damages the motherboard.
  4. Blow out dust from front to back, focusing on the CPU cooler, GPU fans, case fans, and PSU intake.
  5. Clean dust filters. Remove them and rinse under water. Let them dry completely before reinstalling.
  6. Wipe down the case exterior with a microfibre cloth.

Pro tip from our workshop: If you have pets, clean every 6–8 weeks instead. Pet hair is the number one cause of overheating PCs we see in our repair service.

Every 6 Months: Software Deep Clean

Windows Update Check

Go to Settings > Windows Update and install any pending updates. Feature updates can wait, but security patches should always be installed promptly.

Clear Temporary Files

Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary Files. You can safely delete everything listed here. This often frees up 5–20GB.

Review Startup Programs

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then click the Startup tab. Disable anything you don’t need launching at boot. Common culprits: Spotify, Discord, Adobe Creative Cloud, and game launchers you rarely use.

Run a Malware Scan

Windows Defender is genuinely excellent these days. Run a full scan (not just quick) every 6 months. If you want extra peace of mind, Malwarebytes offers a free on-demand scanner.

Annually: Deep Maintenance

Reapply Thermal Paste (Every 2–3 Years)

Thermal paste between your CPU and cooler dries out over time, reducing heat transfer. If your CPU temperatures have crept up by 5–10°C compared to when it was new, it’s time for fresh paste. We use Arctic MX-6 on all Destello builds — it lasts longer than most budget pastes.

Check Cable Management

Cables can shift over time, especially if you’ve added or moved components. Tidy cables improve airflow, which directly affects cooling performance.

Test Your RAM

Windows has a built-in Memory Diagnostic tool. Search for “Windows Memory Diagnostic” in the Start menu and run it. Faulty RAM can cause random crashes, blue screens, and game instability that’s often blamed on other components.

Signs Your PC Needs Professional Attention

Some issues need more than a quick clean. Bring your PC to a professional (or contact us) if you notice:

  • Blue screens (BSODs) happening more than once a month
  • Loud clicking or grinding noises from your storage drives
  • GPU artefacts (coloured squares, lines, or flickering during games)
  • Your PC randomly shutting down during gaming (usually a PSU or overheating issue)
  • Temperatures above 95°C despite a recent clean

At Destello Tech, we offer a Gaming PC Tuning & Deep Cleaning service for exactly these situations. We’ll deep clean your system, reapply thermal paste, update all drivers, optimise Windows, and run a full stress test.

The Bottom Line

A well-maintained gaming PC should last 5–7 years before you need to think about upgrading major components. Spend 15 minutes a month on basic checks, clean the dust every quarter, and you’ll get the best possible performance from your hardware.

If you’re thinking about a new build, check out our custom gaming PCs — every Destello system ships fully stress tested, with clean cable management, and is built to be easy to maintain.
